The technique

What balayage really means

From the French "balayer" — to sweep. We paint the colour on by hand, strand by strand, freely and precisely, so that natural, sun-kissed transitions emerge.

With the innovative Airtouch technique we isolate the finest strands with a hairdryer — the result: even softer, gentler gradients that look as if they grew naturally.

Your roots stay untouched — which means the result stays beautiful for months and moves gently with your natural hair growth.

Balayage know-how

Technique, tone and timing — good to know

Classic, foilyage or Airtouch — which technique for what?

The classic balayage is painted freehand — ideal for natural, sun-kissed accents. With foilyage, foils support the lightening: more brightness, still soft transitions. And the Airtouch technique, our speciality, isolates the finest strands with the hairdryer — the result is the softest gradients currently possible.

Which technique suits you depends on your starting colour, hair structure and desired brightness. That's exactly what we clarify in the colour consultation — honestly, including a realistic assessment of what's achievable in a single session.

From soft blonde to bronde: finding the right tone

The most beautiful balayage is the one that suits your skin tone: cool types glow with ashy blonde shades and soft blonde, warm types with caramel, honey and copper nuances. Bronde — the middle ground between brown and blonde — suits almost everyone and grows out particularly unobtrusively.

Dark hair is balayage territory too: chocolatey gradients with caramel tips look elegant and natural. Feel free to bring inspiration photos — we translate them into a tone that works for you and your hair.

Balayage in 1040 Vienna — in the heart of Wieden

You'll find our colour atelier at Favoritenstraße 68 in the 4th district — a few minutes' walk from Hauptbahnhof, right by the U1 Taubstummengasse. Allow 2.5 to 4 hours for your appointment — and use the processing time cleverly: with us you can have your manicure done in the meantime, because hairdresser and nail salon work under one roof.

After that: 4–6 months of calm. Your balayage grows out without a hard root line — with the occasional glossing the tone stays fresh, entirely without monthly colour appointments.

Frequently asked

Balayage — FAQ

How long does a balayage appointment take?

Depending on hair length and the desired technique, a balayage appointment takes between 2.5 and 4 hours. We take the time your hair needs for a perfect result.

Does balayage damage my hair?

We use Olaplex and Wella care products that protect your hair during colouring. The result is healthy, glossy, strong hair.

How often do I need to refresh my balayage?

Unlike classic colouring, balayage lasts 4–6 months, because the roots grow out naturally. You can come in for a refresh at your leisure — no stress, no hard lines.

What's the difference from highlights?

With highlights, strands are coloured using foil — creating harder transitions. With balayage we paint the colour on by hand — for natural, softer transitions without clear lines.

What's the difference between balayage, foilyage and Airtouch?

Balayage is painted freehand, with foilyage foils support the lightening, and with Airtouch the finest strands are isolated with the hairdryer — for the softest transitions. Which technique suits your hair we decide together in the consultation.

Does balayage work on dark hair too?

Yes — caramel and bronde tones look particularly natural on brown hair. Very dark hair sometimes needs two stages for bright blonde results; we discuss that honestly beforehand.
