The rule of thumb is simple: every 3 to 4 weeks. But as with all rules of thumb, it's worth looking at the details — because the right refill rhythm saves you money, repairs and, in case of doubt, your natural nail.
Why refill at all?
Your nail grows — and the gel grows forward with it. After a few weeks, a strip of natural nail is visible at the regrowth area and the set sits further forward than intended. That's not just a cosmetic matter: the balance shifts. The reinforced zone moves towards the tip, the leverage on your natural nail increases — and with it the risk of breaks at the most delicate spot.
During a refill (with us from €50), the grown-out area is filled in, the shape is re-filed and everything is sealed anew — afterwards your set is as stable and as good-looking as new.
Your personal rhythm
- 3 weeks: fast nail growth, lots of hands-on work in daily life, long sets
- 4 weeks: normal growth, short to medium length, an office-based routine
- Book in sooner if: lifting is visible, a nail has broken, or the tips feel "heavy"
What happens if you wait too long?
From about 5–6 weeks it gets critical: lifting spreads, moisture can get in, the risk of breakage rises. Often the material then has to be completely removed (from €30) and built up again — which costs more than a refill and puts unnecessary strain on your natural nail. Refilling regularly is quite simply the cheaper AND healthier option.
Refill or new set — which do you need?
A refill is enough when the set is intact and only the regrowth area has grown out. A new set is needed for large-scale lifting, several breaks, or when you want to fundamentally change shape or length. We'll tell you honestly before we start — promise.
Salon tip: Changing colour at a refill comes with no surcharge stress: the surface is being redesigned anyway — the perfect moment for a new colour, French or babyboomer.
