Removing gel nails yourself — please don't!

Removing gel nails Vienna — gently filing down the gel layer with a professional file at the nail salon

It usually happens in the evening on the sofa: a corner of the gel lifts, you pull at it "just a little" — and snap, half the set is off. Along with the top layer of your natural nail. Please don't do this. Here's why — and how to do it properly.

Why picking it off is so damaging

As it cures, gel bonds firmly to the nail surface — that's exactly what makes it so long-lasting. Tear it off and you take keratin layers of your nail plate with it. You might know the result: white, rough patches, thin bendy nails that need weeks to recover.

Afterwards the nail isn't "ruined by the gel" — it's ruined by the tearing off. The distinction matters, because it's 100% avoidable.

How professional removal works

  • 1. Shortening: Any overhanging length is carefully taken down.
  • 2. Filing down: The gel is removed in a controlled way, layer by layer — with feel and experience, until only a wafer-thin protective layer remains.
  • 3. Natural-nail check: We assess the state of your nails honestly: ready for a new set, or care first?
  • 4. Care finish: Nail oil, smoothing, a nourishing top coat if you like — or straight on to the new set.

Duration: around 20–30 minutes. Cost with us: from €30 — aftercare included. If you're switching straight to a new set, we plan removal and rebuild in a single appointment.

"And with acetone at home?"

Classic gel — unlike shellac — is not acetone-soluble. Hours of soaking does little for gel and dries out skin and nail severely. Shellac, on the other hand, does dissolve with acetone, but the same applies here: setting the wraps properly and recognising the right moment takes practice — in the studio it takes 15 minutes and your nail stays intact.

Salon tip: A single lifting spot or one broken nail is NO reason to tear everything off. Pop in briefly — a repair is often quicker and cheaper than you think.

SOS: what to do if something has already torn off?

What's done is done — now it's about limiting the damage: don't work the affected spot further, gently smooth sharp edges with a fine file (in one direction only!) and keep the area supple with nail oil. Then make an appointment soon — we'll take the rest down in a controlled way and judge whether the nail can handle a new set or needs a protective layer first.

After removal: the rebuild routine

Freshly "freed" natural nails often feel soft — that's normal and settles within a few days. You can help with a simple routine:

  • Nail oil daily — the single most important product, massaged in morning and evening.
  • Keep short and file round — less leverage, less tearing.
  • Gloves for wet work — water and cleaners are twice as taxing now.
  • Optional: natural nail strengthening — the thin protective gel layer bridges the transition period until your nail is back to full strength.

Prepared like this, nothing stands in the way of the next set — or of deliberately well-cared-for natural nails.

Conclusion: from €30 against weeks of trouble

The maths is unbeatably simple: professional removal costs from €30 and 30 minutes. Tearing it off yourself costs nothing — except intact nail layers, weeks of regeneration and, most of the time, a studio visit anyway to limit the damage. Decide correctly once, and your natural nail stays as healthy as it was under the gel.

Frequently asked

Quick questions — FAQ

How much does removing gel nails cost in Vienna?

With us from €30 — gently filed down, aftercare included. Combined with a new set, we plan both in a single appointment.

Can I remove gel nails myself with acetone?

Classic gel is not acetone-soluble — soaking does little and dries out skin and nails. Shellac is soluble, but here too removal in the studio is the safer choice.

How long does removal take in the studio?

Around 20–30 minutes including care. With a new set straight afterwards it takes correspondingly longer — tell us at booking what you're planning.
